Kelly says White House gig 'not the best job I've ever had'

President Donald Trump is planning to nominate Kirstjen Nielsen to succeed John Kelly as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Politico, Reuters and other outlets reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources.

"I would just offer to you that although I read it all of the time pretty consistently, I'm not quitting today", he told reporters, after press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders introduced him by saying she was "calling in the Marines".

And he denied that he'd been brought in as chief of staff to "control" the president.

When asked about President Donald Trump's frustrations, Kelly, speaking to a group of reporters, said, "One of his frustrations is you". Exasperation with media coverage has been a common refrain for the commander-in-chief... one that Kelly subtly echoed when asked about the president's "frustrations" with the job.

John Kelly, who has so far maintained a low public profile at the White House, on Thursday described the president as a "thoughtful" and "straightforward guy" and joined his criticism of the media over what he claimed are false reports. His appearance followed recent reports that he's unhappy in his job and has considered leaving. "I don't think I'm being fired today, and I'm not so frustrated in this job that I'm thinking of leaving". "I was not sent in to or brought in to control him. you should not measure my effectiveness as chief of staff by what you think I should be doing".

A couple of times he has tweeted his frustration with diplomacy and with Tillerson, though other senior advisers - including Kelly and Defense Secretary James N. Mattis - were also known to favor diplomacy. "But when we go in to see him now, rather than onesies and twosies, we go in and help him collectively understand what he needs to understand to makes these vital decisions".

And, in conclusion on that topic, Kelly joked, " I don't think I will fire anyone tomorrow". The best job I ever had, as I said, is when I was an enlisted Marine sergeant infantryman.

Without naming any particular publication, Kelly led off by insisting that he has no plans to quit and doesn't expect to be fired. "But there are an very bad lot of things that in my view have been kicked down the road".

How do I know this?

"One of his frustrations is you". It is astounding to me how much is misreported.
