Warner Bros. and New Line's latest movie is based on renowned horror writer Stephen King's 1986 novel of the same name.

"It" shattered several box office records this weekend earning a whopping $123.1 million in North America and almost $185 million globally. And New Line Cinema at the North American box office this weekend on its release. Hell, horror movies don't do this type of business, regardless of rating. "Let's face it, people love horror movies, and within the darkened walls of a movie theater, the communal electricity that is created by a bunch of people being scared out of their wits is nearly as fun as the movie itself; this is why the film has obliterated expectations and is setting records". That marks the third-largest movie opening for 2017 following Beauty and the Beast and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, beating out Spider-Man: Homecoming (which made $117 million in its first week) on the way. Studio research showed broad appeal as the female/male split was almost even at 51/49. Other top foreign earners are Annabelle: Creation (US$8.6 million) and The Hitman's Bodyguard (US$7.9 million).

The movie, from Argentine director Andy Muschietti, comes after one of the slowest cinematic summers in years and only cost $35 million to produce. Before that, there was Hotel Transylvania 2 at $48.5 million.

These numbers are utterly insane, and prove that it doesn't matter when in the year a film is released, in terms of generating record grosses-all that matters is that audiences actually want to see it.

"There's something really special about the story itself, the way the movie was made, and the marketing".

The remake of the Stephen King story is also a victor with critics, sitting now at 87 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, 70 percent on Metacritic and scoring a B+ Cinemascore. Wonder Woman's worldwide total is now $816 million.

"It's humbling when something performs behind your wildest expectations", says Warner Bros. It is part of the popular "Conjuring" series of movies.
